Louder than Words: CurePSP Voice Program
CurePSP is partnering with ElevenLabs to provide free access to voice banking and cloning services for people with PSP, CBD and MSA*. Through their Impact Program, ElevenLabs is aiming to give one million licenses through their partner nonprofits.
Changes to speech are common in PSP, CBD and MSA, and one that many people find emotionally challenging and isolating. Voice banking or voice cloning, is a way of using technology to prolong the use of a person’s voice and ability to communicate with their loved ones and the world around them.
We highly recommend working with a speech-language pathologist when using and implementing the program into your daily life. They will be able to provide advice when choosing words and phrases to include, work with you and your loved ones to create a successful communication system and answer any questions you may have.
The program is of no cost for those who are using it through the Impact Program.
*If you have an MSA diagnosis and are interested in voice banking services, please see Mission MSA’s collaboration with ElevenLabs by visiting missionmsa.org/elevenlabs.
Voice banking is the process of recording words and phrases in your own voice to create a “bank” of speech you can use later. This way, if speaking becomes difficult or no longer possible, you can still communicate using your own voice. Different from voice banking, voice cloning is the use of artificial intelligence to create an entire library of words that you did not directly record. Instead, you use clips of your voice, and AI creates additional words and phrases from those clips. Yes! If your speech is still clear and strong, you can record audio and upload it into the ElevenLabs software. However, if your speech has changed to the point where it may be difficult to understand what you are saying, you can use old recordings or videos of your voice, as long as there are at least 10 minutes of content. Someone who is physically able to use the program on a phone or tablet with their fingers or other assistive devices (stylus, etc.) and whose cognitive status doesn’t impair their ability to search for words and phrases within the program. A tablet, smartphone, or computer. It is ideal to have someone who is familiar with technology to help. If you aren't great with computers or phones, you can ask a family member, friend, or neighbor to help. You can also ask your local library if they offer technological help! If you have a speech-language pathologist involved in the process, they may be able to help as well. ElevenLabs is ready to help with any questions or concerns regarding the process, software or program. You can talk with the chatbot or submit a support request by visiting this webpage. Speech-language pathologists may also be able to answer questions. Please note that CurePSP is not able to answer any technical questions about the program. A physician, often a neurologist, will fill and sign the physician diagnosis verification form (digitally or physically and then scanned). You will attach that form when submitting your application.
